LG Electronics (LG) is pleased to collaborate with acclaimed artists Anish Kapoor and Barry X Ball, and to showcase their works on LG!s cutting-edge digital canvas at the inaugural edition of Frieze Seoul. Both exhibitions are on view at the fair in the LG OLED Lounges (COEX Hall C) from September 2 to 5. The works are displayed on LG OLED Objet Collection models Easel and Posé, LG’s new lifestyle TV models, which utilize millions of self-lit pixels to deliver true color, with an infinite contrast ratio. Following its successful collaborations with Kapoor at the 2022 Venice Biennale and Art Basel in Basel, and with NFT artist Kevin McCoy at Frieze New York 2022, the dual exhibition at Frieze Seoul reaffirms LG’s commitment to exploring the most innovative intersections of art, technology, and transformative viewer experience.
Prominent American sculptor Barry X Ball debuts new works on the LG OLED TV screen, presenting detail and surfaces one can almost feel. The artist is known for his bold sculptures which utilize cutting edge techniques and materials, all while drawing inspiration from classical reference points. His practice radically revives the tradition of figurative sculpture, using unconventional materials and methods, including virtual modeling, digital scanning and printing, and computer-controlled milling. For his activation at Frieze Seoul, Ball transforms a selection of his physical creations into 3D digital images with ultra-high surface detail designed to replicate the experience of tactility. Ball’s digital works — together titled Granulo-Specular Chiaroscuro Meta-Morphs (Alchemic Black Steel, Alchemic Gold, Alchemic Silver, Alchemic Copper) — utilize LG’s state-of-the-art OLED Evo TVs to accurately reproduce the textures and colors of the materials, including precious metals and gemstones, of their physical sculptural counterparts. On the final day of the fair, Ball will present a public talk on his works and recent NFT practice.
Frieze Seoul continues LG’s ongoing collaboration with the esteemed British-Indian artist Anish Kapoor. Kapoor’s first-ever digital works — featuring three-dimensional, abstract shapes with slow-shifting, saturated colors — are rendered in incomparable true-to-life quality and scale on LG’s unique-form-factor and only rollable TV. As part of the partnership, the LG SIGNATURE OLED R Anish Kapoor Edition is also on display during the fair. The exclusive, special-edition model includes Kapoor’s media artwork complete with a numbered certificate and the artist’s signature.
“Both artists are renowned for their thought-provoking sculptures and innovative use of materials. We are thrilled to showcase their unique talents as they explore the expanding possibilities of digital technology in their work using LG OLED as their medium,” said Kate Oh, Head of Home Entertainment Marketing Communications at LG Electronics. “At Frieze Seoul, LG continues its commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and visual experience — elevating life and art though the self-lit picture quality of its peerless OLED TVs.”
As Global Partner of Frieze, LG continues to provide enriching art experiences around the globe, hosting exclusive exhibitions and events that highlight and explore the intrinsic link and harmony between art and technology. Its OLED ART project continues to produce memorable artist collaborations expanding the definition of art, while providing inspiring new viewer experiences.
